The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) is hosting a Hiring Event at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Law Enforcement Training Academy, located at 411 Integrity Way, Virginia Beach. This one-day event will provide applicants the opportunity to complete several key steps in the application process at one time with support from VBSO personnel, expediting the hiring process.

This Hiring Event will consist of the written test, physical ability test, polygraph questionnaire, and panel interview. Applicants should arrive no later than 8 a.m. for registration and expect to be on-site for several hours.

Photo ID Required

At check-in, you will be asked to present valid photo identification. You will not be admitted to the written test without it. The written test will take approximately two hours and will consist of reading comprehension, counting accuracy, inductive reasoning, and deductive reasoning. Your test will be graded upon completion. Those who pass will move on to the Physical Ability Test, which is conducted by the VBSO Training Division. The Physical Ability Test will take an additional hour (approximately) and is measured as a pass/fail test. The minimum scores are as follows:

  • Pushups: 11 completed using proper form
  • Sit & Reach: 5.33 centimeters
  • Trunk Pull: 72 pounds of pressure
  • 300-Meter Run: 112 seconds

Those who pass the Physical Ability test will fill out the polygraph questionnaire and complete a panel interview.

Applicants who successfully complete all elements of the Hiring Event will be considered for a Deputy Recruit position with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office contingent upon passing the background and credit checks, psychological evaluation, and City physical.

Attire

Applicants should wear appropriate physical fitness attire and athletic shoes. This event is rain or shine, with the run portion of the Physical Ability Test completed outside. Please be prepared for cold and/or rain.
