The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) is inviting community members to step behind the scenes of deputy training through a new quarterly community engagement initiative, Inside the Academy.

The event at the Law Enforcement Training Academy will provide citizens with an inside look at how deputies are trained and prepared to serve the Virginia Beach community. Basic Academy training is over 17 weeks long.

Attendees will learn about classroom instruction, scenario-based training, professional standards and accountability expectations. The event will also include opportunities for participants to engage directly with VBSO training staff and ask questions about deputy training and career pathways.

“Training is the foundation of public trust,” said Sheriff Rocky Holcomb. “Our deputies are held to high standards, and this initiative allows our community to see firsthand the preparation, professionalism and commitment required to serve. Opening our doors strengthens transparency and reinforces our partnership with the citizens we serve.”

Capt. Nick Curtis leads the VBSO Training Division and is spearheading this new initiative.

“Our goal is to provide the community with a clear understanding of what it takes to become a deputy and the level of preparation our staff receives,” Curtis said. “From classroom instruction to scenario-based training, every component is designed to ensure deputies are prepared to perform their duties safely, professionally and with accountability.”
