VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (April 22, 2025) – The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office (VBSO) is hosting an all-day opening Hiring Event for individuals interested in expediting the application and testing process to become a deputy sheriff. The event will be on Saturday, April 26, starting at 8 a.m. at the Law Enforcement Training Academy, located at 411 Integrity Way.
New deputy recruits are eligible for a $5,000 hiring bonus once all training requirements are met. Lateral hires from other law enforcement agencies are eligible for a $10,000 hiring bonus.
Interested applicants should bring a valid photo I.D. and arrive for registration at 8 a.m. The event will provide the opportunity to complete several key steps in the application process at one time with support from VBSO personnel, expediting the hiring process.
This Hiring Event will consist of a written test, physical ability test, polygraph questionnaire and panel interview. Applicants should expect to be on site for several hours.
Those who successfully complete all elements of the Hiring Event will be considered for a deputy recruit position with the VBSO contingent upon passing the background and credit checks, psychological evaluation, and city physical.
Deputy recruits will work in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, with future opportunities to work in Court Security and Transportation, Civil Process and specialty divisions, such as the Criminal Intelligence Unit and K9 Unit. Deputies typically work 15 days per month, with 15 days off. The VBSO provides a comprehensive, competitive benefits package, which includes health care, paid time off, life insurance, retirement through the Virginia Retirement System and possible tuition reimbursement.
The starting salary for deputy recruits is $49,790, which automatically increases to $52,280 after graduation from the 17-week VBSO Basic Academy. The VBSO offers robust promotional opportunities, with salaries up to $168,464.
The Basic Academy prepares deputies to be safe and successful in their careers as sworn law enforcement officers. It includes training in Virginia law, arrest procedures, ethics, cultural diversity, firearms, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operations, first aid, crisis intervention (mental health) and more, spanning 80 classes and 500 hours. The graduates also complete rigorous physical fitness training and courses pertaining to the VBSO’s core operations: Corrections, Court Transportation and Security, and Civil Process. Graduates who successfully meet the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services requirements for graduation earn their Basic Jailer, Court Security and Civil Process certifications. The VBSO also offers Law Enforcement certifications.
The VBSO is a state accredited agency with the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission and is Virginia Values Veterans certified, which means it meets or exceeds benchmarks for the hiring, promotion and retention of U.S. military veterans.
“I invite you to come work for the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, the best sheriff’s office in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” said Sheriff Rocky Holcomb. “We need deputy recruits who want to protect and serve their community while earning great pay and benefits. Come and have a successful career making a difference in the community with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.”
